NMU students and organizations:  Let's show the world our Olympic spirit! The World Cup will be broadcast on the Versus cable network in the United States and on Chinese and Korean television.

As the new sponsor for the U.S. Speed Skating team, Comedy Central's Colbert Report is anticipated to feature the World Cup event as well. Help us show the Colbert Nation NMU cheers on teams from the U.S. and around the globe.

On November 12-15, 2009, the USOEC and Northern Michigan will be hosting fans and skaters from all over the world.  The ISU World Cup Short Track Speedskating Competition is an international event that features the top skaters racing head-to-head fighting for a spot in the Olympics.  The event will be the last chance to catch these world class athletes before they head to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics!

ASNMU will be hosting a World Cup Spirit Competition between student groups to challenge NMU students to show  Olympic spirit.  All student and housing organizations are eligible.

Judging the Spirit Competition

The ASNMU Spirit competition will be based on which student organization can show the most spirit and enthusiasm for their adopted country based on the following criteria:

  • ASNMU representatives will be judging each groups spirit at the trials.
  • Each organization will register for the country of their choice; remember it is first come, first serve.
  • The organization will then promote and support that country by showing their Olympic spirit.
  • Leading up to the competition, spirit will be measured by the amount of promotional effort you do for your country.
  • World maps will be placed at chosen areas on campus. Coloring in your country on the map, writing good luck notes, and showing your support with inspirational messages will be judged by the ASNMU "Spirit Police".
  • Judging will also take place the weekend of the event.  Groups will receive points for showing up for the event and cheering the loudest for their country.
  • The "Spirit Police" will be judging everyday of the competition at specific times (to be announced) throughout the Nov. 12-15. The more members of your group that attend, the better the chance we have of seeing your spirit!
  • Remember that the most spirit wins, so don't be afraid to go all out for your country!  Activities could include (but not be limited to)
    • Wearing organization apparel
    • Costumes reflecting your adopted country
    • Signs (please limit them to 36" x 48'" so those seated around your group can see the speedskating competition).
    • Memorized cheers/chants/dances
    • Invite an international student from your adopted country to sit with you.  NMU has students from:

Afghanistan, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Saint Lucia, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey and the United Kingdom

  • Spirit points will also be given to student organizations who can bring their sister organization from the Michigan Tech University to the event.

The more spirit you bring with you the better!

Awards

  • First place will receive signed posters from the entire U.S. Olympic Speed Skating team!  The winners will also be given a pizza party in addition to their posters.
  • Second place participants will receive a pizza party.
  • Third place will receive an ice cream party.
